Happy Hanukkah.

Starts on Dec 26th, 2005

Chanukkah, the Jewish festival of rededication, also known as the festival of lights, is an eight day festival beginning on the 25th day of the Jewish month of Kislev.

Chanukkah is probably one of the best known Jewish holidays, not because of any great religious significance, but because of its proximity to Christmas. Many non-Jews (and even many assimilated Jews!) think of this holiday as the Jewish Christmas, adopting many of the Christmas customs, such as elaborate gift-giving and decoration. It is bitterly ironic that this holiday, which has its roots in a revolution against assimilation and the suppression of Jewish religion, has become the most assimilated, secular holiday on our calendar.

I spun my dradle, and I didn't even get ring around the Challah! Better to win a bagle than to drive a Winnebago - given the price of gas (not to mention lox which you can finally get from the local fisheries, so they tell me - and at a reasonable price).

Merry Christmas to all - and enjoy the timing of Hannukah which allows for eight more days of the Christmas Presence, so to speak.

It's my excuse for not mailing early.

So, Chappy Channukah to you too! The Solstice was yesterday. Have an even fuller day tomorrow. . .

Get those candles up in the right order on the menorah. I think you start from the outside in except for the lighting candle which always stands in the middle. Correct me if I'm wrong.

I appreciate your remarks, Inda, about the irony of it, but I don't think Hannukah will ever be assimilated like the secular version of "X-mas." (Personally I do most of my shopping at January sales). Nonetheless, I say rejoice in your pagan roots if you have them and are lucky enough to feel them on the solstice. If you know there is more than one Judas, you can celebrate the sustaining of the flame and the resistant nature thing. It's all good stuff!

The Book of Ruth tells the Jew that it is good thing to assimilate the good neighbor. The real problem for Judaism is the usurpation of religion by the State which perverts it, just like in the US, n'est-ce pas? The US, where the Christians generally are Right but not Christian. Jesus died for their sins,if not Joshua who fit the battle of Jericho. (And the walls came tumbling down).

Out goes the Rooster and in comes the Doggie! Happy New Year - and a new up and coming January of '06. It's been a hundred years since that earth-shaking last January '06 roun' here.
