TOMINAGA Fûsei (1885-1970)

“I wonder if the snow loves the trees and fields, that it kisses them so gently? And then it covers them up snug, you know, with a white quilt; and perhaps it says "Go to sleep, darlings, till the summer comes again.”

― Lewis Carroll, Alice's Adventures in Wonderland & Through the Looking-Glass

Winter

Let myself go to bed;
New Year's Day is only a matter
for tomorrow.

Camphor tree roots are quietly getting wet,
in the winter rainy air.

A handsaw is sounding,
as if from a poor one,
at midnight in this winter.

Old man's love affair;
in trying to forget it,
a winter rainfall.

In an old pond,
a straw sandal is sinking
-- it is sleeting.

Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening

By Robert Frost

Whose woods these are I think I know.

His house is in the village though;

He will not see me stopping here

To watch his woods fill up with snow.

My little horse must think it queer

To stop without a farmhouse near

Between the woods and frozen lake

The darkest evening of the year.

He gives his harness bells a shake

To ask if there is some mistake.

The only other sound’s the sweep

Of easy wind and downy flake.

The woods are lovely, dark and deep,

But I have promises to keep,

And miles to go before I sleep,

And miles to go before I sleep.

quote:
WHITE SILENCE by Margrit Rueger

The morning air carries
the fragrance of snow,
sparkling white beauty
reflecting in my eyes.

I plunge into this softness
this myriad of snowflakes
each a masterpiece of design
beholding a vision of peace.

My footprints across the field
a friendly message to the sky.
I am embraced by the woods,
aware of my perfect solitude.

My breath the only sound,
I let beauty and silence
enter and expand within
and my heartbeats dance.

I need not ask any questions.
All answers resonate in my heart,
through the magnificence of nature
I hear the divine language of Love.

Surrounded by infinite purity
I stand in stillness and awe
to heaven I raise my voice,
whispering words of praise.

I touch upon the mystery of life
merging with the glittering light.
I am the snow, the sun, the sky
one with the Source, I shine.

(978~unknown), “Last year’s fragile, / vanished snow is falling again / I feel like I’m seeing you, / I want to rush outside, / have nothing between us.”

Japanese poem by Lady Izumi Shikibu (978~unknown)

"It is the time of rain and snow / I spend sleepless nights / And watch the frost / Frail as your love / Gather in the dawn."
Japanese poem by Minamoto no Muneyuki from Ogura 100 poems (early 13th century)

"Winter loneliness / In a mountain village grows / Only deeper, when Guests are gone, / and leaves and grass / Are withered: troubling thoughts"

Christmas Poems Page 4

Born In A Manger
by Catherine Pulsifer

Born in a manger
Was that of a Savior
How little did they know
How heaven and earth were a glow.

This baby he did grow
And lived to thirty-three you know
But the influence of His presence
Gave us all the best present.

He taught about love
About the kingdom above
For our sins He did die
A gift we cannot repay.

Lord Jesus we thank you
Your presence is true
Our love for you is great
And at Christmas we celebrate.

A Story in the Snow
by Pearl Riggs Crouch

This morning, as I walked to school
Across the fluffy snow,
I came upon a bunny's tracks --
A jumping, zigzag row.

He must have hurried very fast,
For here and there I saw
Along his jerky, winding trail
The print of Rover's paw.

I set my lunch pail on the snow
And stood there very still,
For only Rover's clumsy tracks
Led down the little hill.

Then suddenly I thought I heard
A rustling sound close by;
And there within a grassy clump
Shone bunny's twinkling eye.
